"The purposes
of this organization shall be to provide a home for the reception and support of
needy boys and girls who are in need of a home and a helping hand, to maintain
and operate a school for them and to attend to the physical, industrial, moral
and spiritual development of those who shall be placed in its care; its spirit
to be evangelical without being sectarian."
~ Reverend George Walter Hinckley 1889
GWH Changed My Life |
Avery, 18
"I came to GWH with a shoulder chip the size of Plymouth Rock. I was dead set on
hating the place. This turned out to be tough—because everyone smiled and gave
me one chance after another. So I learned to see the kindness in people’s hearts
and stopped thinking about what others wore, or where they came from.
GWH is a place where I live, learn and interact, and most importantly—grow. I
can make mistakes and not be judged. I am offered advice and solutions. When I
leave for college, I will always consider GWH my home, my shelter and my
family."
About GWH
Good Will-Hinckley provides a
home and helping hand to young people in need. The not-for-profit organization
has helped over 6,000 youth since 1889. Today, GWH is home to young people once
caught in a cycle of conflict and loss. Before life at GWH, they lacked a stable
home, school, or network of support.
The 2,450-acre campus serves as many as 300 youth per year, ages 5 to 21. Good
Will-Hinckley offers complete residential, educational, and counseling services.
The GWH program focuses on youth safety and well-being and nurtures strong,
healthy families.

Dorothy “Bibby” Alfond Visitors Center
Margaret Chase Smith Gallery
The Visitors Center is a replica of the very first cottage at Good Will.
The original property belonged to the family of
U.S. Senator
Margaret Chase Smith. Reverend Hinckley purchased the 125-acre Chase Farm in
1889. The Chase homestead became Good Will Cottage. The Visitors Center houses a
tribute gallery in the Senator’s memory.
Carnegie Library
The 1906 Carnegie Library at GWH is named for the industrialist and
philanthropist. Scottish-American Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) funded more than
2,500 public libraries worldwide. Of these, the GWH building may alone be a
private library.
The Classical Revival style building was designed by prominent New York
architect Albert Randolph Ross. He also designed the Carnegie Library in
Washington, D.C.
As Carnegie Library enters its second century it services the entire GWH campus.
Service is enhanced by the Zlotin Library Room, a satellite branch at Averill
High School.
Prescott Memorial
The Prescott Memorial (1916-1920) was the first Good Will administration
building. This building was destroyed by a fire attributed to faulty electric
wires. Thanks to the original donor the structure was rebuilt and rededicated in
1922. The second Prescott Memorial remains the GWH administration building to
this day.
Focal points include Bishop
Auditorium and the Roundel. The latter is an oil by American Impressionist
Charles D. Hubbard. In 1918 he was commissioned to paint a symbol of the Good
Will ideals. Prior to the 1920 fire the painting had become known as the “Good
Will Roundel.” It was rescued without damage and can be seen in Prescott
Memorial today.
Moody Memorial Chapel
Moody Memorial Chapel houses the non-denominational GWH Spiritual Life
Program. The optional program offers youth their daily start twice weekly.
Sunday services held for the Good Will campus are open to the public.
The crowning features of the 1897 granite Chapel are its two stained glass
windows. These catch the rising and setting rays of the sun. The colorful
display enhances area weddings and other personal and community celebrations.
For weddings, interested parties may call 207-238-4064; all other matters please
call 207-238-4043.
