Greenville School Department
We believe our schools should provide a safe and inviting environment in
which:
- Student opinions and class ideas are sought and respected and their
differences and unique abilities are nurtured.
- Each individual is encouraged to be well-rounded, striving to achieve
academic, athletic, and artistic excellence, as well as developing a social
conscience.
- Students are encouraged to be life-long, self-motivated learners inside
and outside of the classroom. They should be able to work, independently with
confidence and also effectively in groups.
- Each individual learns to make responsible decisions and to take
responsibility for his/her decisions and actions.
- Parents are welcome and encouraged to participate in the school's
activities and programs.
- There is a mutual respect among parents, teachers, students, and community
members. This respect is enhanced by the knowledge of each other's positions,
issues, desires and needs.
The Greenville School System has a reputation for providing high quality
education; we feel that offer a rich mix of traditional and innovative
education. Our student/teacher ratio of approximately 11 to 1 to ensure that
students recieve the individual attention they deserve.
The school system has actively pursued the alignment of its curriculum with
the Maine Learning Results. The reading skills of our elementary students are
enhanced with the addition of a very strong reading recovery program. Our
special education department consists of three full-time faculty, four full-time
and two part-time aides. The system also recieves the services of
speech/language, occupational therapists, and physical therapists through an
agreement with Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital.
Students in the eigth grade are offered the opporunity to take algebra 1,
which enables those students to complete a five year math sequence, culminating
with calculus as seniors. Students in grades 7-10 are afforded the opportunity
to be involved in the Jobs for Maine Graduates program. This program stresses
school/community involvement, including public service. Our non-tracked high
school curriculum offers two foreign languages: French and Spanish, several
Advanced Placement courses, including an English/Language focus, an
English/Literature focus, micro and macro economics psychology. Over seventy
percent of our graduates continue on to post secondary education.
Students are encouraged to particpate in a wide variety of extra-curricular
activities to encourage the development of responsible and involved citizens.
Our Campus
Our campus is located in the center of Greenville. The school enrollment is
about 400 students grades K-12. We are able and do provide individual attention
for each of our pupils.
The campus consists of three separate buildings and athletic fields.
* Grades 6-12 are housed in the Oakes Building, built in 1936 * The Nickerson
Elementary School is home to grades K-5
* Pritham Gymnasium is the third facility on our campus, providing space for
physical education classes and other athletic/social events
* The athletic fields, provide excellent facilities for track and field events,
soccer, baseball, and softball.
Recent additions to our athletic facilities include a quarter mile
roller-oval, sand volleyball, and a combination ice-rink/skateboard park .
We are proud of being able to provide a variety of educational and athletic
programming.
Resources
Resources include Diehl Memorial Library, the PC Lab, Mac Lab, and Auditorium.
