SHS is a comprehensive high school, enrolling approximately 1200 students in grades 9-12. SHS operates on a 4x4-semester block schedule and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges as well as the Maine Department of Education.

The curriculum at SHS offers approximately 150 courses within 12 disciplines. It is a comprehensive curriculum with a variety of academic levels of instruction, including honors and advanced placement courses. Remedial as well as English as a second language instruction is offered. Grade 9 instruction is divided into teams that emphasize literacy, writing across the curriculum and high expectations for all students. The intent of the team approach is to assist students with a smooth transition from the junior high to the high school, its faculty and staff. Computer systems are available for student and faculty use in classrooms as well as in a modern technology laboratory.

The Sanford Public Schools serve nearly 4000 students from kindergarten through high school and provide adult education programs for 1500 additional citizens. The Sanford School Department is governed by a five member elected school committee and is managed by an administrative team comprised of the Superintendent of Schools, Business Administrator, Curriculum Director, Director of Special Education, principals, and the Director of the Sanford Regional Vocational Center. The K-6 educational program is housed in five schools. Students in grades 7 and 8 attend Sanford Junior High School. The secondary program of studies is located at Sanford High School and the adjacent Sanford Regional Vocational Center. In addition, an alternative school is available to students in grades 9-12. This program along with the Adult Education Administration Office and classrooms is located at

Lincoln School in Springvale. The school system employs over 300 teachers. Additional professional staff includes guidance counselors, computer specialists, librarians, social workers and nurses.
