The South Portland School Department serves 3061 students in
eight schools: five K-5 elementary schools, two middle schools for students in
grades 6-8, and one 9-12 high school. Because of inadequate space at the high
school, two high school programs are currently housed in another school building
off campus. Thanks to a supportive community, all of the district's five
elementary schools have been newly constructed or renovated to provide students
with equitable and beautiful learning spaces.
Having completed the last of the elementary construction
projects with the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year, the School Board
turned its attention to the three aging middle and high school facilities, and
appointed a Secondary School Facilities Committee to study and plan for
renovation or reconstruction of those facilities. The Committee is currently
developing plans for a renovated high school, with a referendum planned in 2007.
Middle school plans will be developed over the next several years through the
State's Priority School application process.

and the meeting schedule of the Secondary School Facilities Committee are
posted on this web site, and the public is always welcome at those meetings.
