St. Dominic Regional High School
is a high
school located in
Lewiston, Maine that was founded in
1941. It was the
idea of Rev.
Herve Drouin, the pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Perish. The original school
was located in the former Dominican Club on Bartlett Street in Lewiston and was
run by the Brothers of Sacred Heart, primarily used to teach the young boys of
the parish about the faith.
In
1945, the first
class of 20 young men was graduated. The following year a four-year school for
women was instated by the
Dominican Sisters.
In
1956 the ice arena
which had provided the majority of the money to the school, burned down. For ten
years after this unfortunate event the school struggled to keep up with
expenses. In 1966,
the Dominican Sisters could no longer provide teachers, and the Dominican
Fathers handed the legal title of the school over to the Diocese of
Portland.
In the fall of 1998 plans for a new building in
Auburn, Maine. On
August 8,
2000 the ground
breaking ceremony took place and the school opened on
January 6,
2002.
